This book is a memorial to the brave women who defied Hitler by preserving a part of their heritage through the recording of recipes. The starving women of Terezin recall the recipes they prepared before imprisonment. One of the main authors Mina Pachter died of hunger and sickness on Yom Kippur 1944. She realized that this would be fatal. She escaped with her future husband. After months in hiding, she reached Switzerland and escaped the almost certain extermination in a concentration camp, and finally a new life in America, and attempting to come to terms with the Holocaust. The film grapples with the torment of living with the legacy of the Holocaust. The film describes the Strauss’s return to Germany. They wanted to confront the past by going back to Berlin. Herbert Strauss taught history at City College. The Strauss went back to Germany; they describe this experience in detail.
